Yoga Techniques for Chemotherapy Recovery

A medical procedure, as traumatic as chemotherapy, requires patience, strength, and a fierce desire to get well. Chemotherapy affects the entire body and mind, causing patients to feel weak, tired, and sometimes, hopeless. The process of healing must involve the mind as well as the body.

A positive attitude can go a long way toward healing. Laughter Yoga, Yogic relaxation techniques and meditation are powerful methods for keeping one's mind in a positive mode. A positive mindset is just as important as physical recovery, and Yoga ultimately helps one experience the best physical, mental, and emotional health.

On the physical level, patients must gradually build back strength and stamina by eating healthy and beginning to be more active. If given the chance, the body can be a powerful instrument for self-healing. Restorative Yoga poses and breathing can be an extremely therapeutic way to navigate back to a healthy mind and body.

Pranayama - Yogic Breathing

Stress is a large factor when dealing with any serious illness. Breathing and meditation are healthy ways to release the stress and negative thoughts and energy from the body. Breathing deeply, and fully, is a simple form of meditation that helps chemotherapy patients focus on filling the abdomen and lungs with clean air - then, pushing it out. Belly breathing can be accompanied by positive visualizations to increase healing within the body.

Patients should find a quiet, comfortable spot to sit or lie. Breathe in through the nose, filling up first the belly, then the chest until full. Then, slowly let the breath out through the mouth. Patients may also choose a mudra to channel healing to specific parts of the body. Meditations can also be accompanied with positive mantras, or affirmations, such as - "I am strong and healthy.," or "My body will heal itself with time and effort." Belly breathing can be done anytime, anywhere, to release anxiety and encourage healing within the body.

Asanas - Yoga Postures

Any of the many Yoga poses can benefit recovering chemotherapy patients. Depending on one's energy level, ground-based (seated, supine. or prone) Yoga postures may be better for days when energy is taxed. Additionally, Yoga poses can easily be modified with blankets, bolsters, chairs, blocks, straps, or other devices. Patients should do only what feels right for their body. Sometimes, it is nice to focus on something besides the pain for a while, concentrating instead on relaxing, breathing, and stretching. Patients can focus on a specific area of the body that feels tight, to release any joint or muscles tightness, or they can opt for an overall body stretch. Patients should start out slow - doing only what they can. They will soon realize their body is strong and capable. This will encourage them to continue practicing Yoga throughout the healing process and beyond.

Yoga for Healing - Keep it Simple

Healing, Restorative, or Therapeutic Yoga does not have to be complex, physically taxing, or vigorous. Patients, who are new to Yoga, can begin by learning one or two poses to practice on a regular basis. Repeating a sequence each morning, or evening, can be a powerful routine to help the healing process, by building strength and agility.

10 Ways to Relax Using Yoga

Lives are often stressful, and relaxing yoga poses can help you to loosen up and feel rejuvenated. To succeed in doing relaxing yoga poses, try doing them in a warm room temperature with no distraction. Dim the lights, concentrate, breathe deeply and enjoy the feel of pressure coming out of your system.

Yoga is popular for its capacity to treat and bring peace of mind. Breathing is one important thing in yoga to be cautious about. It applies to every single move or pose you do while exercising. Stretching and toning while slowing down your breath is a good thing to do while incorporating other yogic meditation techniques. The rate of breath serves as the mirror of your mind's quality, connecting your mental, emotional and psychological states and depths of your breath.

Here are the 10 Ways to relax using yoga:

1.) Get the stress out: It is to unleash any tension held from the day. Stand with your feet one leg distant apart. Toes in slightly, legs active and knees bent. Make a fist with your hands, as you inhale raise your arms up over your head reaching high and as you swing your arms down through your legs, make a large sound on your exhale. It's a deep release. Repeat a few times.

2.) Release and shake it away: Sit in a crossed legged, easy posture; use a cushion and the wall if that's more comfortable. This provides a firm and stable base for the body as well as keeping your energy centered. Raise your arms up over your head. Keep your spine long and upright. Start shaking your arms, head and shoulders - kindly and fairly steadily - to release the energy from your day. Try this for 10 full breaths or more.

3.) Knee hug: Lay onto your back, bend both knees into your belly. Wrap your arms around your legs and tuck your chin into your throat (keep your head on the floor if your neck is sore). Close your eyes and give yourself a squeeze of gratitude, keep a long natural breath for a minute or longer.

4.) Calming forward bend: Stand with your feet hip distant apart. Hands on your hips, lean forward and bend your knees. Hang off your hips, letting your neck, face and eyes be soft.

5.) Legs up the wall: Sit to the side of the wall and put your legs up so that you are against the wall. You can keep your knees bent if that's more comfortable, and let your legs roll out slightly. Place your hands down by your side, on your belly or across your chest to connect with your heart.

6.) Simple Twist-Twist: It stretches and strengthens the back muscles and spine. Sit on the floor in a cross-legged position keeping the spine straight. Slowly rotate your torso to the right and place the right hand on the floor behind the right hip. Grasp the right knee with the left hand and look over the right shoulder. Hold the pose for 10 seconds. Repeat the twist to the left.

7.) Meditation Posture-Half Lotus: This stretches hips, knees and ankles, improves posture. Sit cross-legged, right leg in front of the left, keeping the spine straight. Do not force this position, or it may injure the knees. Gently grasp the right foot with both hands and slowly bring it high up on the left thigh. Extend arms out to sides of knees, touching index finger to thumb, palms facing up. Breathe deeply and hold the pose for 10 seconds. Repeat with the left foot.

8.) Sphinx-Backward Bending Posture: Back and abdominal stretch. Lie on your abdomen with legs hip distance apart. Bend down elbows and place beneath your shoulders, arms straight forward. Keep the shoulders down from your ears while tightening the buttocks. Hold the pose for 5 seconds.

9.) Triangle-Standing Position: This pose stretches and strengthens the legs and lower back. Stand with your legs three feet apart, your right foot pointing towards the right, your arms extended out to your sides. Reach out with your right arm extending your torso until your right hand reaches your right leg. Grasp your right leg as far down as you can (between the knee and ankle) while extending your left arm upward. Turn your head to look up at your left hand. Hold this pose for 30 seconds. Come up slowly and repeat on the opposite side.

10.) Relax: Flatten your back with your arms and legs apart and eyes closed. Roll your shoulders away from your ears, head to the centre. Toes are falling out to the sides, legs straight and relaxed with palms facing upward. Let every breath deepen as your mind rests on the rhythm of your breathing. Lay in sarvasana for 5-10 minutes before rolling out to the right hand side and coming back up to a cross legged sit

Follow these simple ways to relax your body and mind; you are on the best way in finding relief from tension and anxiety. You will be able to cope better with your everyday problems and be emotionally stronger. The more you spend time doing these tips, the more likely you are to act with patience and understanding. Generally, the most effective way to overcome stress is to simply change the way you deal with them. The result is an overall feeling of relaxation. Slowly, you will begin to forget about the stressors in your life, as you immerse yourself in positive thoughts. When you practice yoga routinely, you will begin to see its long-term benefits and how it takes the tension out of life. Whatever you do, remember that stress can be overcome with yoga. Dealing with stress can be difficult, but using yoga to alleviate that stress is easy!

Top 7 Tips To Increase Your Yoga Teacher Income

Making a decent living from teaching yoga classes is extremely difficult unless you have 5 or more full classes each week. Promoting your other services and selling products will help increase your income.

Here are seven tips on how to increase yoga teacher income...

Tip #1 Class Handout

Create a handout for your service (e.g. 1-2-1 sessions) and print a bunch of them. At the beginning of your next class briefly mention: "I have a special offer at the moment for 1-2-1 yoga sessions. If you're interested, please pick up a flyer from the table on the way out." At the end of the class, remind them about the handout.

Tip #2 Create Kits

For example you could create a kit called: The Lazy Man Yoga Kit. It could contain: yoga block, tie, lavender eye bag, bolster, meditation CD, yoga DVD, incense sticks, incense holder, etc). Make sure your Kit has an interesting name!

Tip #3 Holiday

Plan a yoga holiday. This is by far the most profitable tactic! You can earn more in one week than in a whole year of teaching yoga classes. I created a resource called: Yoga Retreat Kit, to help you plan a successful yoga retreat.

Tip #4 The Piggyback Tactic

If you don't want to go to the effort of planning a retreat, do a Google search for luxury retreats in your geographical area (e.g. town or county), find the telephone numbers and call them up saying something like: "Hi my name is George Watts, I'm a yoga teacher based in Builth Wells, Powys. I'm calling to let you know if you're ever looking for a yoga teacher to give a class during your retreat, I'm available."

Tip #5 Make Money While You Sleep With Passive Income

Back in 2004 I was a successful dropshipper - I sold products on eBay that I never saw. I didnt' have to pack or post I found businesses that had great products and sold them on eBay. The businesses would then package and ship the products to my customers. It was like printing money. It almost felt like cheating, but was and still is 100% legal. It's the perfect yoga passive income to supplement your income. The best part is that once you've found products and listed them on eBay, your only work consists of clicking a button once a week.

Tip #6 Unique Clothing

You must stand out from the crowd! Do not sell run of the mill clothing. Selling unique yoga clothing can be a great excuse for going on holidays. My mum taught me this. She used to own a jewellery shop and would take 2 or 3 holidays abroad every year searching for new products for her shop.

Tip #7 Unique Products

Create a unique product. Let your imagination and creative juices flow. When you create something that is UNIQUE, you're far more likely to attract customers from all over the world. Here a few examples to get you going:

* Acrobatic Yoga DVD (for the adventurous yogi)

* AntiGravity Yoga DVD (where you're suspended in mid air)

* Asanas For Alcoholics

* Baby Yoga Clothing

* Chic Yoga Handbags With Asanas

* Denim Yoga Clothing (look and feel cool)

* Doing Yoga With Your Dog DVD

* OM Jewellery

* Ruff Yoga DVD (yoga for dogs)

* Star Wars Yoga DVD (which will make you a flexible Jedi Master. It includes poses such as 'downward facing Wookie'. This is my favourite example of unique products. I think it's pure genius! It will make a great gift at Christmas time).

* Yoga Dogs Calendar

* Yoga Straws (includes a backbend on the top half of the straw so you can make your straw do a really deep backbend).

* Yoga Thongs

* Yoga For Equestrians DVD

* Yoga For Inmates DVD

Hope you enjoyed these yoga teacher business tips.

Yoga - Common Beginner Questions

If you've just started practising yoga, then you could have a few questions that you're looking to answer. Here are the most common questions taken directly from the mouths of my yoga beginners. Hopefully you'll find something here to suit your situation and learn something new.

Q. I'd like to find a short routine that I can do each morning before work. I don't have a lot of time - is there anything that you can suggest?

A. One of the most powerful poses for the body that suit the morning time is the Sun Salutation. Not only will it give your body an early boost of energy, but it's perfect as the first pose that you do as part of a routine. You'll be able to focus on breathing well, bending both forward and backward with a touch of strength work. Start off with just 5 or 10 Half Sun Salutes to get warmed up. Then move into the pose known as Sun Salute A.

It's very important to move slowly and with your mind on it. Don't push yourself but use a steady and smooth movement and breath. Just 15 minutes of Sun Salutation will set you up for the day with energy and flexibility.

Q. I'm quite overweight. Should I wait until I've lost a few pounds, or can I practise yoga even though I am 80 pounds too heavy?

A. You don't have to wait to lose weight - you can get started with yoga immediately. You'll just need to keep in mind that some of the poses might be harder to accomplish. Yoga will give you much in terms of mental and physical benefits and this could put you in the frame of mind to become fitter and lose a few pounds. Yoga helps people find balance and if we were already perfect then it wouldn't give us so much of a benefit. Everybody who does this form of exercise comes to it from a different place. Just getting onto that mat is a huge step in the right direction.

By practising your daily routine, you are likely to find that you will make more conscious healthy food choices and you will be more conscious of treating your body well by taking other exercise opportunities. You will find yourself calmer, more focused and in the present moment. You can take yoga classes or if you feel shy, then purchase one of the yoga DVDs that can be done from home.

Q. I cannot afford to take classes at a studio, how can I get involved?

A. The economy has been hard on all of us, but don't worry it's still possible to learn how to do yoga in a low cost way. There are a wide range of DVDs that can be played on your home entertainment system. Experienced and qualified instructors will show you how to make the moves and you won't need to give money to the gym. You won't even need to pay out on petroleum to get there either. One payment and you're done. Just order your DVD and put on some clothes that will stretch with you. Take a class every once in a while, to be sure that you are on the right track with your poses.

Thomon Wardle is an experienced practitioner of yoga and Pilates. Visit http://www.getfitwithpilates.com/ and view the range of yoga DVDs and Pilates DVDs to get started with your weight loss with yoga. There is a free eBook worth £9.95 for immediate download while you are there.

The Coolest Aspects of Bikram Yoga

Some people jog miles and then back, others prefer to go to the gym and carry those crazily heavy equipment, or run the treadmill perhaps. Many are still hooked-up with the Tae-Bo culture of the late 90's, while there are still a few who for the longest time continue to do the traditional aerobics (which my mom used to do by the way). For the past decades, different forms of exercises have been introduced to the public, and most I must say have been widely accepted well by the people, eventually embraced by the pop-culture. Perhaps, for something to become a trend, it has to be very cool. Among them is Bikram Yoga.

It's just another form of Yoga as what some people would say, but it seems to be getting much attention, and a public notice. Curious as I am, I did some research on Bikram Yoga, and I found out that this technique was actually already established early 1970's. And as the reading research progressed, I realized that this workout regimen is actually indeed pretty cool! I wondered then why I've only just discovered this recently, when in fact this was made popular way before I was even born.

Though other exercise routines and innovations share the same health benefits, what makes this Yoga type exceptionally "cooler" that the others then?

Personally, I fancy the idea of having to workout in a hot environment, which is unique to Bikram Yoga. This means you get to easily perspire and palpably see your sweat literally dripping on the floor, like as if you see your toxins flushing out of your system like a river. But more importantly, the heat was for the purpose of aiding you to go deeper and safer into a particular Yoga Pose, or an Asana pose. In turn, it replenishes health to every muscle and joint, and stimulates increase of circulation to all organs in the body. If celebrities and athletes have subscribed to Bikram, and are loyal clienteles of the technique, then it really must be effective and real.

What's cool as well with this method is that you get to flex your body into different poses you never believed you can do. Aside from exercising on a physically motivating atmosphere along with other sweating enthusiasts, the 26 Bikram Yoga set postures are relatively challenging as well, stretching in different forms and directions, yet still fun to perform. One might look really awkward at start, posing on difficult and funny positions, but that makes it all the more amusing since this is something more diverse compared to the other exercise disciplines.

Bikram Yoga might be very physically demanding, but seems worth the effort. After all, this discipline came from the same culture who introduced us Kama Sutra.
